CDinD: Digital Design: past, present and future.

At present time, looking around, we can see global design changing. Its structure. During modern days with development of new technologies, graphic design, as a subject goes beyond the leaf and paper.
But this process changing the concept of "design" has been many times before. The largest began in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when designers were looking for new forms and tried to go from the old principles of decoration. Theory of spiral in action.

Historical link

The history of design as a "design art activity" originates in the middle of the 19 century and associated with the development of industrial production, creates the needs for a new profession.

  • Design as communication arts and crafts. Refers to the emergence in the late 19 century, the famous English "Arts and Crafts Movement ," headed by William Morris. They formed the major tenets of the theory and creative design principles that influenced the direction of the school and later years .
  • Design as Art and Industry sector: the beginning of 20 century , when artists took the leading positions in many branches of modern industry and had the opportunity to shape corporate identity enterprises and to influence policy issue of electrical appliances, automobiles , radio ( Peter Behrens in activities of AEG and American automotive firms "Ford" ) .
  • Design as appearance graduate refers to the appearance of the first schools and teaching methods of design. ( VHUTEMAS in the USSR (1920), the Bauhaus in Germany (1919).
  • Formation of design as a profession, depending on its actual occurrence in life - directly in production and trade. Schedule timing in this case begins with more late - with the 1930s , more precisely since the U.S. withdrawal from the great economic crisis.

Design rapidly developed during the whole 20th century. But we have to mark should three new forms which have emerged at this time. They become prerequisites for arise digital design.

  • Animation.
  • Motion Graphic Design is a subset of graphic design in that it uses graphic design principles in a filmmaking or video production context (or other temporally evolving visual medium) through the use of animation or filmic techniques. Examples include the kinetic typography and graphics you see as the titles for a film, or opening sequences for television or the spinning, web-based animations, three-dimensional station identification logo for a television channel. Although this art form has been around for decades, it has taken quantum leaps forward in recent years in terms of technical sophistication.
  • Computer graphic. It is graphics created using computers and the representation of image data by a computer specifically with help from specialized graphic hardware and software.

Among the pioneers of the discipline we can talk about:

  • William Fetter was an American computer graphics art director. In 1964, while working for Boeing, he made the first computer model of a human body ("Boeing Man"). He coined the term Computer Graphics in 1960, to describe his work at Boeing.
  • Walt Disney was an American business magnate, animator, cartoonist, producer, director, screenwriter, entrepreneur, and voice actor. A major figure within the American animation industry and throughout the world, he is regarded as an international icon, and philanthropist, well known for his influence and contributions to the field of entertainment during the 20th century.

  • John Whitney, was an American animator, composer and inventor, widely considered to be one of the fathers of computer animation. He founded a company called Motion Graphics Inc.

  • Saul Bass was an American graphic designer and Academy Award winning filmmaker, best known for his design of motion picture title sequences, film posters, and corporate logos. His work included title sequences for popular films such as The Man With The Golden Arm (1955),Vertigo (1958), Anatomy of a Murder (1959), North by Northwest (1959), Psycho (1960), and Advise & Consent (1962). His designs were simple, but effectively communicated the mood of the film.

  • Charles Csuri, is a pioneer in the field of computer art. He is best known for pioneering the field of computer graphics, computer animation and digital fine art, creating his first computer art in 1964. Csuri has been recognized as the father of digital art and computer animation by Smithsonian, and as a leading pioneer of computer animation by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and The Association for Computing Machinery Special Interest Group Graphics (ACM SIGGRAPH).

Modern days

I think that today, graphic design is no longer just a graphic. And it is wrong to tie it to what that one area. We live and work during multisubject design and animated digital media design is one of the way to develop this area. Animated digital media design, as we can see at present time, includes typography, computer graphics, video, animation, sound and even live performances. All together they mixed with a great part of interactivity and creativity.

Last years have become the most active in terms of development for animation and digital design. The key role in it was by huge step in the development of computer, mobile phones and touch screens. Now, our life is connected with these objects, and therefore with the design, which is being developed for them. Furthermore, using of this interesting new direction we can see in various places of our lives. Anymore, it isn't just an advertisement or a movie. This program for artists and architects, doctors and students.  But of course, in most cases, the most widespread use of this type of design is in the design of films and working with TV. Little about the major players in this market:

  • Lambie-Nairn is an international branding agency within the WPP Group, headquartered in London with offices in Europe, the Middle East and Latin America. Lambie-Nairn works with O2, BBC and Telefónica.
The Disney Channel
Arte. Arte is a European cultural channel broadcasting in French & German.
BBC2
Hotels.com
Global TV (Indonesia)

  • The Ebeling Group (TEG) For 10 years, The Ebeling Group’s directors have created trend-setting and award-winning work in the commercial, film, broadcast, branded content, and gaming arenas, acknowledged by entities like Cannes, One Show, Clio, AICP, D&AD, Promax BDA, Slamdance, and Sundance. Based in Los Angeles, the TEG roster includes: MK12, Leythum, Tennant, Ramon & Pedro, Convert and Caskey.
  • David Carson is an American graphic designer, art director and surfer. He is best known for his innovative magazine design, and use of experimental typography. He was the art director for the magazine Ray Gun, in which he employed much of the typographic and layout style for which he is known. In particular, his widely imitated aesthetic defined the so-called "grunge typography" era.

About future

The contemporary motion design landscape is extremely diverse. The lines between limited screen design and interactive are blurring. The field of computer animation and new technologies only promises to expand in the future. The two most likely path of development design:

  • Interactivity. This installation was designed by the Brand New School in San Francisco. The wall was developed in conjunction with the launch of Adobe CS3 in America.

As real passers by walk along the wall, motion graphics are produced and animate according to the persons movements. The designs become more complicated from left to right. An innovative use of motion graphics, the mural proved incredibly popular with passers by, grabbing their attention and delivering the message in a memorable way.

  • 3D. Utilising the next stage in motion graphic technology, 3D projection mapping, Carlsberg advertised their range of lagers on a building in Liverpool Street. 3D projection mapping is a new way of creating motion graphics that interact with the surface they are being projected onto, creating a visually stunning and eye catching event. It can be used to give the illusion that a building is crumbling and spiders are emerging from the cracks or whatever the animator wishes to create in their new world.

  • Augmented reality. AR is a live, copy, view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented (or supplemented) by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data. It is related to a more general concept called mediated reality, in which a view of reality is modified (possibly even diminished rather than augmented) by a computer. As a result, the technology functions by enhancing one’s current perception of reality. By contrast, virtual reality replaces the real world with a simulated one. Augmentation is conventionally in real-time and in semantic context with environmental elements, such as sports scores on TV during a match. With the help of advanced AR technology (e.g. adding computer vision and object recognition) the information about the surrounding real world of the user becomes interactive and digitally manipulable. Artificial information about the environment and its objects can be overlaid on the real world.
